Belvoir Castle: Sensitive and Expert Lighting That Highlights the Heritage
Perched at an altitude of nearly 650 meters, Belvoir Castle dominates its surroundings as much through its history as through its architectural presence. To enhance its nighttime appeal, the City of Belvoir opted for a respectful approach that is at once aesthetic, environmental, and technical. This vision was brought to life by the agency Le Point Lumineux, in close collaboration with LEC.

Enhancing without distorting: a clear vision
From the very beginning, the design approach moved away from standardized methods. As lighting designer Thierry Walger explains:
“The lighting of the castle was not to be dictated by visitor numbers or demographic considerations, but by the intrinsic beauty of the site, the region, and its history.”
The goal: to reveal the quality of the stonework and the architectural richness of the castle, while avoiding any visual harshness. The choice of a gradual lighting and dimming sequence is part of this commitment to subtlety, offering a natural transition of light that respects the nighttime landscape.
A site steeped in history… and constraints
Designated a Historic Monument since 1956, Belvoir Castle has a complex history, shaped by the passage of time and successive reconstructions. This rich heritage comes with significant constraints.
The elevated location, the ancient ramparts, and the site’s integration into a sensitive natural environment required special attention, particularly regarding:
- the discreet integration of equipment
- energy efficiency management
- preserving the site’s nighttime character
The total installed power was thus limited to 4.5 kW, reflecting a responsible and optimized approach.
Lighting designed for residents… and wildlife
Unlike the spectacular lighting displays found at busy urban or tourist sites, the Belvoir project takes a more intimate approach.
Perched above a village, the castle prompts reflection on local nighttime activities. The project takes into account:
- the visual comfort and sleep of residents
- the preservation of nocturnal wildlife, particularly light-shy species
- a lighting schedule adapted to the seasons and days of the week
Thus, the installation operates at 75% of its capacity on weekdays and 100% on weekends, with adjusted time slots between the winter solstice (lights off at 11:00 PM) and the summer solstice (midnight).
Our LEC Solutions
To meet the project’s requirements, several LEC luminaires were installed: 42 PASSY, 5 CORSICA, 13 ALICANTE, and 1 DMX controller.
The positioning and role of each product were carefully planned based on the site’s geometry, the height of the structures, and the desired effects.
The use of color temperatures plays a key role in how the site is perceived: 3000 K at the base of the towers and 2700 K at the foot of the fortifications
This customized approach highlights one of LEC’s major strengths: offering solutions that can be perfectly adapted to on-site constraints, while ensuring performance, discretion, and reliability.
A Partnership Built on Trust
The success of this project also rests on a proven partnership between LEC and Le Point Lumineux.
“We’ve known LEC for a long time. Together, we’ve completed some wonderful projects and developed lighting fixtures that integrate seamlessly into the sites. Their ability to listen and their responsiveness are invaluable, especially when dealing with the constraints and urgent demands of a project,” explains Thierry Walger
A relationship built on trust that goes beyond simply supplying equipment, toward true co-design in the service of the project’s quality.
Light that tells a story
Belvoir Castle has now reclaimed its place in the nighttime landscape of the Doubs, not as a dazzling tourist attraction, but as a living structure, whose light reveals its volumes, textures, and soul. A project that illustrates how lighting can be technical, aesthetic, and responsible all at once.
By supporting lighting designers with tailored solutions and recognized expertise, LEC reaffirms its role as a key partner in the success of demanding projects, where every detail counts.
