Place de la Comédie in Montpellier: A Light Installation That Highlights the City’s Heritage
The true beating heart of Montpellier, the Place de la Comédie has been the focus of an ambitious lighting project designed to highlight its architectural heritage while respecting its identity and nighttime atmosphere. Designed by Agence ON, this new lighting design transforms the square into a vast open-air theater where each facade contributes to the overall composition.
This project is part of a broader program to renovate public spaces, including Place de la Comédie, the Charles de Gaulle Esplanade, and the Champs de Mars Garden, all coordinated by Agence Ter.
A New Nighttime Interpretation of Place de la Comédie
From the very beginning, Agence ON envisioned Place de la Comédie as a performance space where architecture becomes the backdrop.
“We designed the lighting for Place de la Comédie to resemble that of an open-air stage, with the Opéra Comédie serving as the backdrop.”
The goal was to restore visual coherence between the public spaces and the various facades that make up the square. The existing lighting, which had aged over time, exhibited significant disparities in terms of light intensity, treatment, and color temperature. Designed from the bottom up, it no longer complied with regulations regarding the night sky.
To restore a harmonious overall appearance, Agence ON developed an approach based on two complementary principles: selective highlighting of notable architectural elements and warm 2700 K lighting directed from top to bottom.
“The project is based on a understated and targeted approach, highlighting only the specific architectural details of each facade to reveal its identity. ”
This downward-facing lighting also helps limit light pollution toward the sky and preserve darkness.
The Challenges of a Historic Site
Carrying out work on one of Montpellier’s most iconic squares meant dealing with particularly stringent heritage constraints.
All lighting installations and effects were therefore approved by the Architectes des Bâtiments de France (ABF), with constant attention paid to ensuring the equipment blended in almost imperceptibly and to preserving the historic facades.
“The guiding principles were the discretion of the fixtures, both day and night, and respect for the facades to prevent any damage.”
To meet these requirements, tests were conducted directly on-site to precisely determine the positioning of each fixture. The selected luminaires had to be as compact as possible while still delivering the performance needed to create the various lighting effects sought.
The architectural diversity of the facades also posed a major challenge.
“We had to devise a unified lighting approach capable of adapting to the specific architectural features of each facade, in order to create visual unity while respecting the identity of each element.”
Soft Lighting Designed with Users in Mind
“The architectural features are highlighted in a way that balances the enhancement of heritage with understated elegance. The lighting design principles ensure maximum respect for the night sky and the nighttime environment, as well as for the surrounding neighborhood.”
Lighting directed from top to bottom creates natural shadows reminiscent of those produced by sunlight.
Each floodlight and light strip has also been equipped with visors to improve visual comfort for users. The warm hues selected blend naturally with the materials and stone of the historic buildings.
Close Collaboration with LEC
To successfully carry out this complex project, Agence ON was looking for a solution capable of meeting a wide variety of applications while maintaining technical and aesthetic consistency.
“We chose LEC for the diversity of its fixtures and optics. The idea was to use only a few models across all the facades, but to be able to adapt them in different sizes and with different optics, from spotlights to light lines. ”
This diversity of solutions made it possible to address the specific constraints of each facade while maintaining a consistent lighting design across the entire site.
The agency also highlights the quality of the support provided throughout the project.
