An urban light artwork
As part of the Lighting Master Plan for the municipality of Jette, the City of Brussels, Sibelga, and LEC collaborated on the transformation of the underpass linking Cardinal Mercier Square to the railway station. The objective was to revive a previously uninviting space by turning it into a luminous, legible, and reassuring artistic environment, both day and night.
Isabelle Corten, lighting designer at Radiance 35, conceived a colourful and dynamic installation based on white and orange lighting rhythms that transform the perception of the space while integrating the existing graffiti into the artwork. This interplay of colours acts as a psychological distance reducer, creating an almost seaside-like atmosphere and giving a strong identity to this transitional urban space.
Awarded the 2017 ACEtylène Prize (Small Budgets category) and a special mention from the Golden Rules of Brussels Urban Planning, this project demonstrates how, with limited resources, light can transform an ordinary place into a true sensory experience.
